Istanbul and Anatolia: three empires, two continents, and volcanic country hollowed out into underground cities.
Turkey straddles two continents, divided by the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. Istanbul is its largest city, but the capital is Ankara.
The country has around twenty UNESCO World Heritage sites, among them the historic areas of Istanbul, Göreme National Park in Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale.
The currency is the Turkish lira (TRY). From Morocco, Istanbul is reached on a direct flight from Casablanca; its airport is one of the region's main hubs.
