Monumental gate of a Moroccan imperial city

The imperial cities

Rabat, Meknes, Fez and Marrakesh: four capitals and four eras.

Each of Morocco's four imperial cities was the capital at a different time. Rabat is the capital today; Meknes was under Moulay Ismail, Fez under the Idrisids and the Marinids, Marrakesh under the Almoravids and the Almohads.

The route lends itself to the train between Rabat, Meknes and Fez, with the leg to Marrakesh then taken on the Casablanca-Marrakesh line.
